Wrestling Beats Yale in State Quarter Finals

After winning their 8th Regional Championship in a row the wrestling team traveled to Kalamazoo's K Wings Stadium for the MHSAA Team Wrestling Championships.  Clinton competed in the Elite Eight State Quarterfinals against Yale.  It took complete team effort to defeat Yale, but that is exactly what the Redwolves received.  Clinton came away with a 34-27 win to advance to the Final Four.  The match started at 126 pounds with junior captain Braylon Long starting the Redwolves off.  The captain battled another highly ranked opponent and came away with a 2-0 win after getting a reversal in the second period.  Clinton 3 Yale 0.  Next up was senior Captain Connor Younts.  Younts is a 4 time state qualifier and 3 time state placer so far.  The senior did not disappoint as he picked up a 13-6 win against a ranked opponent.  Connor picked up six takedowns during the match.  Up at 138 pounds another senior captain Maurice Ames earned an 11-3 major decision to collect four team points after earning five takedowns during the match.  Clinton 10 Yale 0.  Dylan Badge picked up a 5-4 decision at 144 pounds as the senior was able to get a reversal in the third period to secure a big win for the team.  At 150 pounds sophomore Tanner Bolton stepped in and battled for the team but lost in the third period.  Clinton 13 Yale 6.  Cliff Jones was up at 157 pounds and battled to a 2-2 match at the end of regulation.  Cliff secured a takedown in overtime to earn a huge win for the team 4-2.  At 165 pounds sophomore John Keibler stepped up for the team and earned a 9-5 win in a match that was critical for the team.  John had several big lifts resulting in three takedowns and the win.  Clinton 19 Yale 6.  At 175 pounds Bryce Randolph came away with a 5-3 win between two ranked wrestlers.  Bryce used a takedown in the first and a reversal in the third to secure the win.  Will Hawkins was in a great match tied up a 2-2 before getting pinned in the second period.  Clinton 22 Yale 12.  Senior Captain Wyatt Hicks came up with a pin at 215 pounds in the first period to ignite the team and crowd.  Next up was Hamza Rafferty at heavyweight as he was able to secure back to back pins and put the match out of reach for Yale.  Clinton 34 Yale 12.  Nate Arntz was pinned at 106 pounds and Zach Taylor lost a 6-4 decision at 113 pounds.  Joe Hodges was the last match of the dual at 120 pounds and dropped his match by pin.  Final Score Clinton 34 Yale 27.  Clinton moves on to the final four Saturday at noon against Whitehall.
