Wrestling Wins 37 Team Tournament at Salem - Ames wins 100th Career Match

Game Date
Dec 29, 2023

Clinton traveled to Salem High School to compete in a 37 team, individual tournament on Friday, Dec. 29th.  Clinton walked away with the team championship after scoring 223.5 team points.  Westland John Glenn was second with 203.5 points, followed by Monroe Jefferson with 167.5 points and Howell with 145 points.  Clinton had 6 in the finals and came away with 5 individual champions.  Freshman Zach Taylor took sixth place at 113 pounds after starting with two pins to the start the day, Zach dropped close matches in the semi finals and in the consultation bracket.  Braylon Long picked up the tournament championship at 126 pounds on the work of three pins and an 8-2 decision in the finals over his opponent from Detroit Catholic Central.  At 132 pounds Connor Younts won a tough bracket and finished with an epic takedown to secure the championship.  Connor picked up three pins and a technical fall on his way to the finals.  In the championship match Connor battled his opponent from Brother Rice and was leading the match before giving up a score and the last thirty seconds of the match did not disappoint.  Connor hit a sweet duck under to tie the match back up and put his opponent on his back to win 9-6 and earn the championship.  Our next champion was Maurice Ames as he picked up two pins and a 5-0 decision to make his way to the finals.  During his finals match against his opponent from Okemos, Maurice earned another pin to finish his day.  Maurice earned his 100th career win in his semifinals as well.  Congratulations Maurice.  Cliff Jones competed at 157 pounds and started out with a 6-2 win before getting a pin in his next match.  Then in the quarterfinals Cliff beat an opponent from Westland John Glenn who has previously defeated him.  But not this time as Cliff won 3-1 in overtime.  After dropping his semifinals match, Cliff picked up another win 7-3 but dropped his match for third 2-3 to take 4th overall.  At 165 pounds sophomore Bryce Randolph picked up the tournament championship by collecting two pins and a 6-0 semifinal win.  In the finals Bryce won by major decision 9-0 to earn the championship.  At 215 pounds Wyatt Hicks rolled to three pins on the day to earn a spot in the finals.  Hicks dropped his finals match to take 2nd overall.  At heavyweight Hamza Rafferty won the tournament championship after earning an pin and a 4-2 decision in the semifinals.  Hamza then pinned his opponent in the finals to win it all.  At 190 Will Hawkins went 1-2 on the day after losing his first match, Will came back and earned a pin, before dropping his final match 0-4. Landon Lakatos competed at 175 pounds and started his day with a pin, dropped his next two matches.  Also at 175 John Keibler lost his first match 10-12 before winning 6-5 in his next match.  Dylan Badge opened his tournament up at 144 pounds with a 9-0 major decision. In his next match Dylan dropped a 2-6 decision before picking up a pin. At 120 pounds Joe Hodges earned a 11-9 overtime victory in his opening match.  Joe lost his next match, but came back to earn a pin of his own.  Hudson Miller competed at 106 pounds, and after earning an opening round bye Hudson dropped his match to end his day.  Several wrestlers that lost in early rounds had their tournament cut short due to a small electrical fire in a bathroom that had us evacuate the event for a short time.  Once we returned to wrestling the coaches and tournament director decided to just wrestle the championship rounds and only place to 6 instead of 8 like originally planned.  So several of our wrestlers were not able to continue due to this.  Overall we competed well and placed ahead of a team that had previously beat us.  We can see the improvement and growth by our wrestlers and our team.  We are home against Hanover Horton on Wednesday, Jan. 3rd at 5:30.  Then the Varsity travels to Warren on Saturday and our varsity girls travel to SMCC on Friday for a tournament.
