Wrestling Qualifies 10 boys and 4 girls to Individual State Finals at Ford Field

Game Date
Feb 19, 2022

On Saturday, Feb. 19th the boys traveled to Constantine for the MHSAA Individual Regionals.  The top four in each weight class qualify for the individual state championships at Ford Field from four different regions.  Clinton sent 12 to regionals and qualified 10 to the individual state finals.  Individual Regional Champions were Logan Badge at 189, Braylon Long at 103, Connor Younts at 112, Connor Busz at 119, and Chase Packard at 130 pounds.  Logan Badge picked up three first period pins in 16 seconds over Jacobie Bonds of Coloma, 17 seconds over Lloyd Ruegink of Three Rivers, and 1:38 over Bennett Vandenberg of Constantine in the finals.  Logan had an extremely dominant performance that many were talking about at the tournament.  He came in with a mission and stepped up to the challenge at hand.  Braylon Long picked up a pin over Lex Specchio of South Haven in 2:26, a technical fall 15-0 over Christian Millican of Columbia Central, and pin in the finals over Antonio Bocenegra of Napoleon in 3:06 to win the region.  Connor Younts picked up a first round pin over Jacob Helder of Hopkins, then an 8-0 major decision over Brendan Yobb of Napoleon to set up his finals match.  Connor gutted out a 1-0 win over Jordan Simpson of Dowagiac.  The match was 0-0 on their feet.  Connor was able to escape from the bottom to earn his point, then was able to ride out Simpson with some great pressure and mat returns to earn the regional championship.  Connor Busz picked up pins over Jorge Riveria of Dowagiac in 1:26, then pinned Talan Flowers of Three Rivers in 1:17.  Setting up his finals against Brandon Bohl of Ostego and earning a win 7-3 to win the regional championship at 119 pounds.  Zak Shadley picked up a second place finish at 125 pounds after defeating Evan Jempty of Otsego by major decision 12-0, then defeated Evan Jempty of Otsego again with a 7-1 win to advance to the finals.  In the finals Zak dropped a very close match 5-3 to Jacob Reif of Quincy to take second and qualify to the state finals.  Chase Packard picked up wins over Jilon Hebert of Otsego by major decision 13-2, then defeating Isreal Villegas of Dowagiac 8-1 to put him in the finals.  In the finals Chase defeated Eric Demas of Constantine with a pin in 3:15 to win the regional championship at 130 pounds.  Coy Perry finished in fourth at 135 pounds to qualify for the state finals.  Coy opened up with a quick pin in 27 seconds over Alex Cunningham of Otsego, then lost a heartbreaker to Derrick Ballinger 5-4 of Jonesville.  Coy then defeated Jalonn Borders of Madison with a pin in 2:31.  In his last match Coy dropped a close 6-4 match to finish fourth.  Maurice Ames placed 3rd at regionals punching his ticket to the state finals at 140 pounds.  Maurice pinned his first opponent Javier Kelley of Three Rivers in 1:47, then dropped his next match to eventual champion Ryker Johnacheck from Williamston.  In his next match Maurice defeated Matt Dion of Williamston 8-3.  In the match for 3rd place Maurice pinned Javier Kelley for the second time of the day to place 3rd overall at 140.  At 145 pounds Ethan Younts opened his tournament with a 15-0 technical fall over Leland Payne of Buchanan.  Ethan then dropped a close 6-3 decision to Dylan McLean of Parchment.  In match to qualify Ethan had to wrestle fellow teammate and long time friend Joey Preston and lost the match.  It was a heartbreaker as a program to have teammates have to wrestle each other to qualify, but they both handled it exactly like you would expect, with great character and respect for each other.  Joey Preston qualified for the state tournament with wins over Landon Moreland of Three Rivers with a 6-5 decision and teammate Ethan Younts.  Joey dropped matches to Gavin Gregory of Otsego both in the first round and in the match for third.  Joey placed fourth and qualified for the state finals.  At 152 pounds senior George Ames wrestled his heart out and pinned his opening opponent Jeremy Rowland of South Haven with a pin in 1:45.  George then dropped a 6-5 decision to Jeremiah Detwiler of Three Rivers.  George then had to injury default in his final match that was tough for everyone in attendance to witness.  He is our captain and leader, to watch him in pain and over come with emotion was heartbreaking.  But this does not define him nor will it stop him from being the great teammate that he is or his future plans to compete at Albion in the fall.  At 160 pound Kent McCombs finished as the runner up after defeating Jackson Stomes of Buchanan with a pin in just 24 seconds, then defeated Connor Plotts of Otsego with a pin in 1:11 to make the finals.  Kent closed the gap from a loss a week ago and dropped a 2-1 decision in the finals to Nick Marienfeld of Napoleon.
