Wrestling Wins The 46th Annual Dave Elliott Memorial Tournament

On Saturday, January 8th Clinton hosted the 46th Annual Dave Elliott Memorial Tournament.  The field of 14 teams saw Clinton claim the tournament championship by almost a hundred points over runner up Woodhaven.  Clinton scored 220 points, followed by Woodhaven with 123.5, Manchester with 118, New Boston Huron and Pinckney with 106 apiece and tied for fourth.  Clinton had seven champions on the day with several starters sitting out the day for various reasons.  103 pounds freshman Braylon Long racked up three pins on his way to the tournament championship as he pinned Onyx Ostrum from Manchester in the finals in 1:16.  Nate Arntz also competed at 103 pounds and earned a thrid place finish as his only loss came to his team mate.  Nate picked up a pin in 45 seconds and earned a 15-2 major decision for third over Ayden Fenby of Haslet.  At 112 sophomore Connor Younts earned the 112 pound championship.  Connor picked up a quick pin in 39 seconds in the first round then ran into a ranked opponent from Woodhaven, Koen Huepenbecker and defeated him 4-1.  In the finals defeated all stater Jake Bunn from Manchester 5-1.  For his efforts, Connor was voted by the head coaches as the most valuable wrestler for the tournament in the light weights(103-140).  At 119 pounds Connor Busz continued the Clinton streak of champions as he won the championship by earning a first period pin in 33 seconds in the first round.  Then Busz defeated Eric Radulescu of New Boston Huron 6-2 in the semi finals.  In the finals Busz secure the win with a 3-1 victory over Jared Bunn of Manchester.  Zak Shadley grabbed another tournament championship for the Redwolves at 125 pounds and he picked up a 5-0 win in the semi finals after receiving a first round bye.  In the finals Zak earned a 7-1 win over his ranked opponent from Grass Lake Matt Rankin.  At 130 pounds sophomore Coy Perry finished a streak of five straight championships for the Redwolves as he rattled off three straight wins after a first round bye.  Perry defeated Sean Doran of Woodhaven with a 10-0 major decision.  Then Coy picked up a first period pin in just 22 seconds to put himself in the finals.  He again picked up a pin in the second period this time to defeat Andrew Ladach from New Boston Huron and earn the 130 pound championship.  Clinton had two other placers at 130 pounds in Dylan Badge at third place and Faith Blackburn in sixth place.  Dylan picked up a first round 9-3 win over Bubba Duffing of Manchester, then won 4-2 over Vincent Navarro of Lincoln park.  Dylan then dropped his semi final match to Andrew Ladach of New Boston Huron.  Dylan bounced back and defeated Levi Podhola of Pinckney 6-0 for third place.  Faith Blackburn opened her day with a bye and then lost 2-11, but battled back for two straight wins of 3-2.  First was over Bubba Duffing of Manchester 3-2, then over Sean Doran of Woodhaven 3-2.  Faith lost her placed match 4-13 to earn sixth place on the day.

At 140 pounds Ethan Younts picked up a tournament championship after pinning his first opponent in just 57 seconds, then earning an 8-4 win over John Lakatos of New Boston Huron to put him in the finals.  Ethan then earned a late first period pin over Reece Brant of Woodhaven to finish his day.  What talked about as the match of the day was sophomore Joey Preston's finals match at 152 pounds.  Joey had a first round bye then pinned Donovan Jackson of Woodhaven to put himself in the finals.  Preston competed against Kevin Palazzolo of Lincoln Park and it was a back and fourth match that had lots of high lights.  But the ending was spectacular as in a tied match Preston earned the escape to go up one, then had a huge takedown to the back and earned the pin to end the match as time expired.  What an emotional match that had everyone in attendances adrenaline pumping.  Freshman Gage Blackburn bumped up to 160 pounds for the team and competed very well as he earned third placed.  Gage picked up an opening round win with a second period pin over Ayden Villatoro of Haslet.  In the semi finals Gage lost a close 5-7 match, but bounced back with a 32 second pin over Drake Neff of Manchester.  Then he picked up his third pin of the day over Kenneth Townsend of Lincoln Park to finish in 3rd at 160 pounds.  Another freshman Jake Felts lost a tough first round match and battled back to a fourth place finish on the day at 171 pounds.  Jake picked up a first period pin in just 38 seconds and 9-4 win over Darrius Houston of Woodhaven.  Jake dropped his final match but wrestled well on the day to earn 4th.  

Logan Badge picked up a first round bye then two quick pins in 11 seconds and 18 seconds to get to the finals. The 18 second pin was over Trenton Warner of Onsted who was a state qualifier.  To start the day the 189 pound weight class had three undefeated wrestlers.  Logan faced Kael Wisler of New Boston Huron who is the number 189 pounder in division two.  Logan came out and grabbed the first take down but ended up falling in a close match 5-6 for his first loss of the year.  At Heavyweight freshman Hamza Rafferty picked up third place on the day.  Hamza earned a first period pin over Thomas Guatz of Manchester in 1:21, then lost to Luis Martinez of Lincoln Park.  Rafferty then pinned Johnathon Oltman in 1:24, before pinning Luke Zanotti of Bay City Central in 2:07 to finish in third place.  Other wrestlers that competed on the day were Wyatt Hicks at 215, Rourke Solomonson at 145, Wyatt Federer at 140, Raven Aldridge at 135, Reed Patrick at 135, and AJ Johnson at 135.

This Wednesday we will travel to Blissfield and compete against Hudson and Columbia Central in an LCAA quad match starting at 5:30.  This Saturday the varsity team travels to a 50 team invite at Oregon Clay High School in Ohio called the Maumee Bay Classic for a two day tournament.
