The varsity wrestling team continued its strong season in dominating fashion Saturday starting the day 27-1 in matches. That record sent 13 Redskins to the championship match in the regional event and those 13 wrestlers will compete at Ford Field March 1st and 2nd with a shot at an individual state title. This is the 3rd year in a row with a new school record for wrestlers competing there. The starting weight was 130 pounds and George Ames was our first qualifier getting 2 pins to get to the finals where he went on to finish 2nd. 135 pounder Spencer Konz secured his spot with a 15-0 win and pin before winning the title with an 8-0 decision. At 140 pounds Kent McCombs won two matches 10-6 and 8-3 to advance to the final and finishing 2nd. Riley Jeffrey at 145 was next and he got to the final with 2 pins before finishing 2nd. Jeff Konz at 152 won his matches 6-0 and 2-1 to advance to the final before finishing 2nd. 160 Pounder Brayden Randolph won 11-1 and by pin to get to the final and then won the Championship with a 13-5 decision. Cecil Rafferty was competing at 171 and Pinned his 2 opponents to get tot he final before falling to 2nd place. Logan Badge secured a pin in his first match before winning 7-2 in the semifinal to reach the championship . There he won 13-0 for his first regional title. Heavyweight Will Felts cruised into the final with 2 pins before falling to 2nd place. Senior Brandon Beach also made the final with a pin and a 6-0 decision. He lost a tough one int he final to finish 2nd. AJ Baxter claimed his 2nd regional title in 2 years with two pins to reach the final before winning 9-4 for the championship. 125 was an all Clinton final with Noah Comar getting there with 2 pins and Christian Minard winning his 2 matches by pin and 12-1. Comar won the title giving the Redskins 5 Champs for the day. Garrett Phillips just missed qualifying losing in overtime at 160 pounds in the qualifying match. The Redskins received the number 1 seed yesterday in the team tournament and will take on Schoolcraft at Kwings stadium in Kalamazoo Friday at noon.
