Brodie Region Champ in Discus and Shot Put; Girls 4x800 Sets School Record; 12 Athletes Qualify for State Meet

On Saturday, May 18, the Redwolves Track and Field teams traveled to Madison High School for the MHSAA Region 26-3 meet. 

Mason Brodie won his third consecutive shot put title along with his first title in the discus. With the wins, Brodie will be attending the state meet for the 3rd time in his 3 years in the program. Joining Brodie as first time qualifiers for the men are Eli Turner who finished 2nd in the high jump at 6'-0" and Brenden Benschoter who finished 2nd in the long jump with a personal best of 20'-5".

For the women, setting a new school record of 10:11.79 in the 4x800 relay and finishing second to qualify for the state meet were Emerald Sierer, Cylee Elkins, Allison Bowles, and Samantha Coots. The seniors along with all of the other qualifiers for the women are first-time qualifiers for the state meet. Bowles also finished second in the 3200m to get the automatic qualifying bid for that event. Coots nearly broke the school record in the 800m, missing the school record by 0.23 seconds with a time of 2:24.33 finishing third but meeting the time standard to qualify for the state meet. Summer Chandler finished 3rd and Bella Bannon finished 4th (and a personal best) in the high jump by jumping 4'-11" and meeting the standard for the state meet. In addition, the 4x100 relay team of Chandler, Katelyn Baker, Madi McGraw, and Ashlynn Phillips ran a time of 53.02 seconds to meet the qualifying standard while finishing 7th in a fast regional meet.

Other medals were earned at the meet by Lucas Goodman (4th - 800m with a PR), Gabe Manchester (5th - 3200m), the 4x100 relay team of Benschoter, Luis Piatt, Nick Spicer, and Angel Rubio (7th), Benschoter (8th - 200m), Eric Ramsey (8th - 400m), the 4x400 relay team of Turner, Ramsey, Goodman, and Piatt (8th), and Brandon Johnson (8th - discus with a new PR) for the men. And for the women, Kaylie Livingston (4th - discus), Cylee Elkins (7th - 800m), and the 4x400m relay team of Chandler, Bannon, Sierer, and Coots.(7th) also earned medals.

Other personal best times for the boys were set by Piatt (100m), Spicer (100m), Brody Wenn (400m), and Maurice Ames (110m hurdles), For the girls, ather personal bests were set by Annika Schmittlein (100m), McGraw (200m), Baker (100m hurdles), and Gabby Cordova (shot put).

Overall, the boys finished 5th at the meet and the girls finished 8th in the 15 team field. The state meet will be at Kent City High School on June 1.

In addition, the girls have qualified for the MITCA team states meet in Clare on the 25th.
