JV Boys Basketball Falls in Final Game of the Season at Onsted

Game Date
Mar 5, 2020
Score
: 44
ONSTED COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL: 49

Despite a valiant effort from the JV boys basketball team on Thursday night at Onsted, they would come up just short and fall to the Wildcats in their final regular season game of the season.  Onsted's 49-44 win means the Clinton JV basketball will finish the season at 9-11 overall, with a 6-6 record in the TCC.  After beating Manchester in their season opener, the JV team had trouble finding their stride, dropping six in a row, before getting things turned around to finish the season by winning 8 of their final 14 games.  Although they didn't reach the 10 win mark, this team has plenty to be proud of.

On Thursday, it was evident that this was going to be an exciting game.  You could see both teams were evenly matched, and playing hard.  When the first quarter horned sounded, both teams were tied at 13.  Onsted began to build a lead that they would play with for the remainder of the game, but Clinton would never be out of it.  A six point halftime lead for Onsted was only three points heading to the fourth quarter as you could see Clinton was not going to go down without a fight.

Not only were the fans treated to an exciting 4th quarter finish by both teams, but they were also treated an experience that no one in the gym will forget.  An Onsted manager, Zach Johnston, was able to get in the game and score a basket.  It was a sight to see, as players and fans from both teams applauded the young man on his accomplishment.

When the game resumed, Clinton cut the Onsted lead to just two points with under a minute remaining on a Landon Busz three pointer.  Clinton was able to get a stop, but a pass sailed over the head of a Clinton player on the ensuing transition that gave it right back to Onsted.  Clinton then began to foul, where Onsted was able to seal the win and walk away with the dramatic five point win.

Derek Tomalak had his best game of the season, finishing with 16 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds, including several baskets in the second half to keep the Redskins within striking distance.

Landon Busz, once again handling the point guard responsibilities with their starting point guard out with sickness, also reached double figures with 12 points.

Kyle Wenk and Keegan Huston each added 6 points, with Wenk also pulling down a team high 7 rebounds, tied with Ethan Herington. Lucas Richie and Freddie Wade also reached the score book tallying 2 points.

With the loss, the JV season concludes.  The team will look to continue the momentum they have gained in their final 13 games of the season as there should be a core of returning players from this years team back for the 2020-21 season.  Congrats to the JV team on their hard fought season and good luck moving forward!
