JV Hangs on for Non-League Road Win at East Jackson

Game Date
Mar 3, 2020
Score
: 44
EAST JACKSON HIGH SCHOOL: 39

Tuesday night road games are rarely ever easy, and that was the case for Clinton JV team Tuesday night at East Jackson.  The team was able to hang on for a 44-39 road victory, despite building a double digit lead, and then losing it to trail by two, before regaining it to hang on for the five point victory. The win means that the JV team will have a chance to finish the regular season at 0.500 as they are now 9-10 overall with one more non-league game remaining.

Landon Busz carried the team in the first half.  Playing without their starting pg who was out due to sickness, Busz moved over from the shooting guard position, to run the point.  Just as he did this past Friday, Busz was able to pour in another 18 points in the first half at East Jackson.  Those first half points helped Clinton gain an early advantage and led by 8 points at halftime.  While it looked as if Clinton would be in control for the rest of the game, East Jackson had other plans.  The Trojans came roaring back out of halftime to take a two point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

That's when the maturity and growth of the JV team began to show.  Instead of panicking and trying to do to much, the Redskins stuck to the game plan and managed to regain the lead.  Down the stretch, there were some opportunities for East Jackson to tie or take the lead, but the Redskin defense held strong getting key stops, and rebounds before eventually sealing the win at the free throw line.  This was a gritty and gutty performance by all team members.

Busz managed just three more points in the second half, after the East Jackson defense made some adjustments, to follow his 24 point performance with 21 points tonight.  Lucas Richie added 7 points for the second consecutive game.  Derek Tomalak chipped in with 5 points to go along with 6 rebounds, while Ethan Herington had 4 points, Freddie Wade 3 points and 4 rebounds, and Bryson VanSickle and Keegan Huston each had 2 points.  Although he didn't score, Kyle Wenk made his presence felt on the defensive end and led the team with 8 rebounds.

The team will finish off their season with a road game at Onsted on Thursday. The game is set to tip at 5:30 with the varsity game to follow at 7:00 PM.
