Comeback Attempt Falls Short at Summerfield

SUMMERFIELD HIGH SCHOOL: 41

The JV boys basketball team traveled to Summerfield on Tuesday night for a TCC matchup.  Despite a valiant comeback effort, the Redskins would fall 41-38.  The loss drops the Clinton JV boys team to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the TCC.

The first quarter saw a lot of action, but little to show for it on the scoreboard as Summerfield led 5-4. Summerfield was able to find their groove first in the second quarter and built a 10 point lead, 24-14 heading into halftime.  The action and pace picked up a notch as the teams came out of halftime.  The Redskins were able to cut in to the halftime deficit, and remain within striking distance for a 4th quarter rally.

In the fourth quarter, the Redskins trimmed Summerifield's lead to just 2 points with the ball, after trailing by as much as 14 points in the third quarter.  A missed shot attempt saw Summerfield race down the court to score and take a four point lead with under a minute to play, which is when things got interesting.  A lengthy possession by the Redskins ended with a foul called on Summerfield as Derek Tomalak was going up for a shot attempt.  This foul was immediately followed by a technical foul on a Summerfield player, which meant the Redskins had four free throw attempts coming and would be getting the ball back with 9 seconds remaining.  Derek Tomalak shot all four free throws, going 2-4, to cut the Summerfield lead to just 2 points and an opportunity to send the game to overtime or take the lead on a three.  However, a turnover on the sideline out of bounds would lead to a Clinton foul with three seconds remaining.  Summerfield would make the first and miss the second.  A last second heave would be off the mark as the horn sounded.

Despite battling sickness over the weekend and leading up to the game, Ethan Herington led the Redskins in the scoring column with 12 points while also grabbing 5 rebounds.  Derek Tomalak added 11 points with Grant Stockford also reaching double figures to finish with 10 points to go with his 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.  Kyle Wenk also hauled in 8 rebounds on the night, and Zach Kovach had 4 steals.

The Redskins JV team will look to get back in the win column with a home game against Britton-Deerfield on Thursday at 5:30PM.  The Varsity game will follow at 7:00PM.
