The new year started off slow for the JV Redskins Boys Basketball team in their first contest of the new year. At Morenci, the Redskins dug themselves a huge hole in the first half that looked to be very difficult to climb themselves out of. Lack luster play, and multiple mistakes led to a halftime score of 29-12 with Morenci leading.
After regrouping at halftime, the Redskins outscored Morenci 16-2 in the third quarter to find themselves trailing by just three entering the final quarter. The push would continue in the fourth quarter as Clinton ended up taking a lead, but not before a response from Morenci that would see them take the lead right back. There was a lot of action in the final minute of play including a three pointer by Grant Stockford that tied the score at 40 with the clock winding down under 10 seconds. An untimely foul by Clinton sent a Morenci player to the free throw line with just over 4 seconds remaining, where he would miss the first free throw and make the second to take a one point lead. Clinton had an opportunity to get a shot off to win after getting the ball to half court for a side line out of bounds play, however the defender guarding the inbounder was able to get a deflection and the time ran out. The buzzer would sound and Morenci walked away with a 41-40 win to drop Clinton to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the TCC.
Grant Stockford led Clinton with 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Zach Kovach chipped in with 8 points, all in the second half to help lead the comeback attempt.
Clinton will be back in action for a rare Friday night non-league home game against Ida, who is currently undefeated. The JV game will start at 5:30, with the varsity game set to tip at 7:00 PM.
