Boys Junior Varsity Basketball vs. Morenci Area HS School

Game Date
Dec 14, 2018
Score
: 64
MORENCI AREA HIGH SCHOOL: 56

The boys junior varsity team was able to leave Morenci Friday night with a 64-56 win.  The team had to stave off several come back attempts.  The Redskins got things rolling right from the tip, as Jacob Huddleston scored within the first three seconds of the game off of a nice bounce from the jump ball.  The rest of the team followed suit, and continued the hot start to build an early advantage.  However, Morenci quickly responded, showing they were not going to go down without a fight, and closed the first quarter on a big run to cut the Redskin lead to one, 23-22.

The Redskin defense picked up the intensity during the second quarter, holding the Bulldogs to 7 points while scoring 15 of their own to build a nine point halftime lead.  Tommy Burt came out of halftime and knocked down a short jumper to build the Clinton lead to 11.  However, that Redskins would score only six more points the rest of the quarter, and the Bulldogs were able to find some baskets on the offensive end to cut the lead down yet again by the end of third quarter and trailed by only four.

The fourth quarter saw the Redskins able to make some plays on the offensive end, including a huge basket off of a steal and two free throws by Ridge Ahrens late in the game to keep Morenci at distance.  Some key defensive stops led to fouls by Morenci which resulted in free throws by Makai Cruz that helped seal the victory.

The best news for the Redskins, other than earning the win, was that the offense showed some life tonight.  It was much needed as Morenci had plenty of offense themselves. Also, the Redskins were able to hold off a late push by Morenci.  Although they made their runs, the Redskins never relinquished the lead.  This shows the growth and learning that has happened since the first two games of the season.

Makai Cruz led the team tonight with 17 points including an impressive 10-14 performance from the free throw line.  He also added 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals.  Gavin Scott reached double figures for the first time this season, scoring 11 points, including three three pointers in the first half, and also grabbed 4 rebounds.  Jacob Huddleston added 9 points, all in the first half, to go with 4 rebounds.  Tommy Burt also scored 9 points, all in the second half, to go with 6 rebounds.  Davey Campbell chipped in with 8 points, and led the team with 7 rebounds from the point guard position.

The Redskins JV are now 2-3, 2-1 TCC, and will host Whiteford on Tuesday night for a 5:30 PM tip.  This will be the final game before the team goes on winter break.
