MICHIGAN COLLEGIATE HIGH SCHOOL: 12
The Clinton varsity football team brought home its first Regional Championship since 2015 with a 13-12 win over host Warren Michigan Collegiate at Madison Heights Bishop Foley High School Saturday night.
Clinton opened the scoring on a fourth-down pass from Derek Tomalak to Ridge Ahrens in the first quarter, and Jonathan Baughey tacked on the extra point to put Clinton up 7-0. However, Michigan Collegiate answered with a score of its own following a long run, but was stopped on the two-point conversion.
A Bradyn Lehman touchdown run later in the second quarter gave Clinton a 13-6 lead, but again Michigan Collegiate answered on a touchdown run following a long pass on third down. Again, the Clinton defense stopped the Cougars on a two point attempt to hold onto a 13-12 lead at half.
The defenses exchanged stops throughout the second half, and Michigan Collegiate found itself with a fourth and two inside the Clinton red zone with just over 20 seconds left. The snap sailed over the head of the quarterback, allowing Tommy Burt to make a tackle that effectively ended the contest.
Brayden Randolph paced the offense with 75 yards on 19 carries, and finished with 12 tackles. Lehman added 41 rushing yards and 12 tackles, and Burt finished with 10 tackles and made some key defensive stops. Freshman Zak Shadley added 9 tackles.
Clinton (9-1) will host Constantine (9-1) in a state semifinal contest at Wegner Field at 1 p.m. Saturday.
