MASON CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS: 24
The Clinton varsity football team advanced to the district finals Friday evening with a 42-24 win over previously unbeaten Erie Mason.
The defensive unit was stifling in the first half, shutting out an Erie Mason offense that entered Friday night’s contest averaging over 50 points per game. Meanwhile, Clinton’s offense rolled behind first-half scores from Davey Campbell (2), Jack Voll and Brayden Randolph to take a 27-0 lead into the break.
George Ames added a 10-yard touchdown run to open the second-half scoring and give Clinton a running clock for a brief time period with a 35-0 advantage. Erie Mason notched two scores to make it 35-16, but Clinton answered with a 56-yard touchdown run with two minutes remaining. Mason added its last touchdown with just two seconds left.
Randolph led the offense with 152 yards on 15 carries, while Ames added 106 yards on 12 rushes. Campbell chipped in with 70 rushing yards and a crucial 40-yard catch to convert a third down and long situation.
Defensively, Clinton limited Erie quarterback Noah Beaudrie to just 74 yards on 22 carries. Beaudrie did finish with 119 yards passing, most of which came when the game was already in hand. Randolph finished with 15 tackles and 2.5 sacks, while Tommy Burt added 8 tackles and two sacks.
