Clinton Athletics Newsletter (Week of September 16)

What a week for the Clinton Redskins! Here is your weekly update on our Clinton Community Schools' athletic teams and events!

It was a magical Saturday afternoon for the Clinton Varsity Volleyball team at Whitmore Lake. Playing in a 16-team tournament, the Redskins defeated Huron Valley Lutheran, and Summit Academy in pool play while splitting with Olivet. Upon entering the knockout stage, the ladies beat Whitmore Lake and then in the finals met up with rival, future LCAA opponent, Blissfield who sports two Division 1 Volleyball players on their roster. The team went 25-19, 23-25 in the first two sets but then put together a dramatic 19-17 third set win for the championship! Clinton upset Blissfield in the Finals! It was an incredible achievement by our girls - a great reward for the hard work they have been putting in. The team plays next at Sand Creek on Thursday and at the Onsted Invite on Saturday.

Varsity Volleyball poses after winning the Whitmore Lake Tournament

The JV Volleyball team found tough sledding at the FGR Tournament this weekend falling to Blissfield, FGR, and Tecumseh. The team will look to rebound this Thursday at Sand Creek.

The Varsity Volleyball team wasn't the only team to win a trophy this past weekend. The 7th graders defeated Grass Lake in the Finals of the Hanover Horton Tournament to take first place! The 8th graders also had an impressive showing, going 4-2 in pool play on the day, also at Hanover. Read more about both tournaments here. Next up: Summerfield at home on Monday.

Cross Country:

The Clinton Cross Country teams started their TCC schedule in strong fashion last week as the Boys finished in 1st place while the girls placed 4th. Gabe Nelson finished 2nd overall in the boys race while Clinton runners also finished in spots 5-8 to seal the victory. 5th was Caden Zbikowski, 6th Matthew Devitto, 7th Matthew Urbanczyk, and 8th Nate Chavez. Makayla Fletcher and Alyssa King each finished 4th and 6th respectively in the girls race. The team will race in Blissfield on Tuesday and then again on Saturday at Pittsford.

The Middle School team dominated the TCC Jamboree in Whiteford last week but unfortunately, their trip to MSU was cancelled on Friday. They'll compete next at Onsted on Wednesday and at Pittsford on Saturday.

Three games in four nights? Not a problem for the Clinton Soccer team as they went 3-0 in last week's games. They started out with a 5-2 win over Blissfield on Monday. Next, they took down Jonesville on Wednesday night, 3-0. Finally, they battled from down 1-0 at halftime to defeat Grass Lake 4-1 on Thursday. The second half of the Grass Lake game was a tremendous display of skillful soccer - beautiful passing leading to spectacular goals. While the team has received offensive production from many sources - Manias, R. Schaffner, Stipe, Erickson, Scott, Montgomery, and Ramirez have all scored in recent games - the story has been the tremendous play of the back line (J. Schaffner, Stipe, Mercier, Chavez, Handy, Kurowicki, with Ramos in net), holding opponents to just three goals during the three game win streak. The boys will take on Brooklyn Columbia Central today on the road and then travel for a rematch with Ida on Friday afternoon.

It was all business for the Clinton Football team on Friday as they did not let the big win over Blissfield distract them from the task of beating Morenci. The team jumped out early and scored often in a 42-8 victory over the Bulldogs. The Redskins had three players (Voll, Randolph, and DeShano) record at least 13 tackles. Jon Baughey was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points as well. The win moves the team to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the TCC. This week they will meet up in a TCC showdown with Sand Creek with major conference implications on the line.

The season long shutout is still alive for the JV Redskins. They defeated Morenci 50-0 behind 502 yards of total offense. Zak Shadley led the way with 170 yards rushing followed by Bradyn Lehman's 146 and Brennan Schnaidt's 139. The team has now outscored opponents 154-0 in three games. Sand Creek awaits on Thursday at the Creek.

That's all for this week. Go Redskins!
