Varsity Football Wins District Championship

Game Date
Nov 5, 2021
Score
: 13
IDA HIGH SCHOOL: 6

On Friday, Nov. 5th the varsity football team traveled to Ida for a MHSAA District Championship game.  Ida hosted Clinton earlier in the season and came away with a 26-20 win over the Redwolves, but not this time around.  Clinton defeated Ida 13-6 to give Ida their first home playoff loss ever.  This is also the first time Clinton has won back to back District Championships in football.  It was a hard hitting and exciting high school football game that was back and forth the entire game.  The difference in the game was Clinton's ability to force turnovers.  The Clinton defense created four turnovers on the night with 3 interceptions and one fumble recovery.  Clinton took the opening drive down the field and in for a touchdown with Jake Felts punching it in the endzone from 5 yards out.  Jonathan Baughey put it through the goal posts to make it 7-0 Clinton in the first quarter.  Ida would take the kickoff and move the ball down the field as the defense had to make several adjustments, but were able to keep them out of the endzone on a critical stop.  In the second quarter Ida was able to break free on a long touchdown run, but Clinton stopped the next play to make it 7-6 Clinton.

The game would remain 7-6 until late in the 4th quarter when Bradyn Lehman scored to make it 13-6 Clinton.  Ida had another chance to try to put one in the endzone but sophomore Coy Perry came up with a huge interception for the Redwolves to seal the game.  Lehman came away with 114 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, Joey Preston had 11 carries for 32 yards, Jake Felts had 31 yards on 7 carries and a touchdown, Nik Shadley had 30 yards on 7 carries and Derek Tomalak had 15 yards on 3 carries.  Offensively Brandon felts had 3 pancake blocks and helped control the line of scrimmage on offense and defense the entire night.  For his efforts Brandon received Offensive Player of the Game.  Other players with pancake blocks were Matt Johnson with 3, Joey Preston 2, Jake Felts, Wyatt Hicks, Derek Tomalak, and Bradyn Lehman all had one a piece.

Defensively Clinton continued to cause Ida issues as Jake Felts led the team in tackles and recovered a fumble.  Bradyn Lehman had an interception and 2 tackles for losses, Kent McCombs had an interception and a sack.  Others with tackles for losses were Brandon Felts with 3, Max Stitt 2, Jake Felts 2.  Matt Johnson came in and played a huge roll on the defensive line and we were able to use him in two different positions to help stop the run.  Matt ended with 2 tackles for losses but because of his effort clogging the middle of our defense he earned Defensive Player of the Game.

There was not a lot of offense by either team and defense was the story of the night.  The kids came together and played with passion and purpose for one another and that was awesome to see.  All year we have talked about building our ship and on Friday we were able to add a little to that ship with a District Championship.  Clinton will host Michigan Center Friday, Nov. 12th at 7pm at Wegner Field for a MHSAA Regional Championship.  We are blessed with another opportunity to play at home in front of our community and we are thankful for this opportunity.  Thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you at the game.
