Varsity Football Defeats Manchester in Opening Game

Game Date
Aug 26, 2021
Score
: 48
MANCHESTER HIGH SCHOOL: 15

In the opening game of the season the varsity football team defeated Manchester 48-15.  The heat was a factor on the turf field and hydration was key.  In the opening drive Clinton was moving the ball well until two separate holding penalties stalled the drive and forced the Redwolves to punt.  The defense forced a three and out and the team started to march down the field again, but suffered a turnover.  The defense again stopped the Dutchmen and took the ball down the field for the first score of the year.  The offensive line marched us down the field and Nik Shadley finished the drive on a 20 yard touchdown run.  Senior Jonathan Baughey completed the PAT to make it 7-0 Clinton.

In the second quarter senior quarterback Derek Tomalak ran in a 10 yard touchdown after a nice team drive.  Baughey's PAT was good to make the score 14-0.  Defense continued to get the ball back into our offenses hands and the offense continued to march down the field.  Senior Captain George Ames capped off the drive with a 7 yard run for the Clinton touchdown.  The PAT failed and left the score at 20-0 Clinton.   The Dutchman were able to move the ball and set themselves up for a 43 yard field goal attempt.  The kick was up and was good. Going into halftime the score was 20-3 Clinton.

Manchester had the ball to open the second half and capped off their drive with a six yard run for a touchdown.  The PAT failed and left the score 20-9 Clinton.  The Redwolves answered the call and finished a drive of their own with a George Ames 7 yard touchdown run, Baughey finished it with a PAT. That improved Clinton's lead to 27-9.  With that kick Jonathan Baughey set a new school record for a kicker and will only add to that the rest of the season.  Congratulations Jonathan, we are lucky to have you.

The fourth quarter saw Clinton open up and pull away as the Redwolves scored on runs from Nik Shadley(68 yards and 2 yards) and Bradyn Lehman from 2 yards out.  Baughey converted all three PAT's.  Manchester did complete a 49 yard pass for a touchdown to make the final score 48-15.

Clinton racked up 530 yards on the ground on 62 attempts to Manchester's 13 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Manchester did put up 179 yards passing on the night.  Clinton's Nik Shadley recovered a Manchester fumble that was caused by George Ames.  Overall rushing leaders for the Redwolves were Nik Shadley with 194 yards and 3 touchdowns, Bradyn Lehman 95 yards, George Ames 81 yards, Zak Shadley with 51 yards, Cole Breitenwischer with 46, and Joey Preston with 27 yards.

The defense was led by Max Stitt with 5 tackles, 4 for a loss.  Kent McCombs and Bradyn Lehman with 4 tackles a piece.  The offensive line was led by Brandon felts, Nate Smith, Wyatt Hicks, Kent McCombs, Max Stitt, Wyatt Hicks, Jacob Gilson, Freddy Wade, Matt Johnson, and Ethan Herington.  This Thursday, Sept. 2nd Clinton will open their season at home at 7 pm against Riverview Gabriel Richard.  Come support your Redwolves.
