Varsity Wrestling Takes 2nd at The Williamston Jim Mooney Classic Tournament

Wrestling had a change of plans for Saturday, Jan. 15th as they were originally scheduled to travel to Ohio and compete at Oregon Clay in the 50 team Maumee Bay Classic.  But due to restrictions and having people out for various reasons, the team was able to get into the Williamston Jim Mooney Classis Tournament.  This was a 21 team individual tournament where Clinton scored 170.5 team points that was good for second place.  Montrose won the tournament with 176.5, Williamston was third with 148, and Yale was fourth with 147 points.  Clinton was missing several starters but it allowed more to compete in the varsity line up for the day.  At 103 pounds Braylon Long took second place losing a close 4-5 decision in the finals to Landon Sopha of Yale.  Long picked up three pins on his way to the finals.  At 112 pounds Connor Younts placed third losing in the semi finals.  Connor defeated Levi Baker of Fowlerville for third with a 15-4 major decision.  Connor Busz competed at 119 pounds and won the tournament championship over Dalton Daniel of Fowlerville 4-3.  Connor grabbed two pins on his way to the championship and earned his 100th career win on Saturday as well. His family was there to celebrate this awesome career milestone.   Zak Shadley was at 125 for the day and finished as runner up after picking up a pin and a 5-2 decision over Carter Moore of Charlotte to put him self in the finals.  Zak lost to Hunter Coxon of Montrose in the finals 3-16.  At 130 pounds Coy Perry competed and placed second on the day.  Coy picked up two first period pins before defeating Seth Woolman 2-1 in the semi finals.  In the finals Coy lost to Aidan Bernard of Montrose to take second.  Maurice Ames competed at 135 pounds and opened the tournament with a pin in the first period before getting pinned by Kaden Malotke of Reece Puffer.   In Maurice's final match he battle hard but dropped a 3-9 decision to Drew Miller of Portland.  Ethan Younts placed second at 140 pounds and picked up two pins on his way to the finals.  In the finals Ethan dropped his match by pin to Ryker Johnecheck of Williamston.  Freshman Gage Blackburn was able to compete in the varsity tournament at 145 pounds, but struggled on the day and failed to place.  But he gained valuable experience for future matches.  Kent McCombs competed at 160 pounds and earned the tournament championship.  Kent picked up a technical fall 16-0 and a 12-4 major decision on his way to the championship match.  In the finals Kent earned a 2-1 decision over Tyler Schofield of Olivet.  At 171 pounds Jake Felts lost his opening match, but bounced back to pick up a pin over Zach Tarnow of Mattawan.  Jake dropped his next match and missed placing.  At 215 pounds Bryce Rosacrans earned an opening round pin before dropping his quarterfinal match.  Rosacrans dropped his final match and missed placing.  Freshman Hamza Rafferty competed at heavyweight and lost his quarterfinal match 4-7, before pinning Lucas Dixson of Quincy.  Rafferty placed 6th after getting pinned by JJ Perez of Shepard.  Clinton was able to enter two more wrestlers and they took advantage of the opportunity.  Nate Arntz placed 5th at 103 after dropping his quarter finals match and battling back to place by picking up three straight pins.  Wyatt Federer competed at 135 pounds and dropped both of his matches but was able to improve in each match.  This Wednesday the team travel to Ida for an LCAA quad match that will feature Dundee and Ida.  On Saturday the team travels to Lowell to compete in the Lowell Duals Tournament.  The team is looking forward to the competition ahead and we continue to seek out the best competition the state has to offer.
