MORENCI AREA HIGH SCHOOL: 46
It was gut check time on Monday evening for the Clinton Redskin junior varsity boys basketball team. Playing their fourth game in seven days, and coming off of an uncharacteristically sub-par performance just two days earlier, the team needed to respond in a big way, and they did just that, beating visiting Morenci by a score of 58-46. The win improved the Redskins to 10-5 overall, and 10-2 in the TCC.
After the dust settled from an action packed first quarter, Clinton was leading 22-14. The pace slowed a bit, but the lead for the Redskins extended to 12, 37-25. The Redskins began to impose their will in the third quarter building their largest lead of the game at 21 points. Morenci did have a response and cut the lead back down to 13, but it was not enough. A three at the buzzer by the Bulldogs made the final margin of victory 12 points.
Leading the way for the Redskins were co-captains Tommy Burt and Davey Campbell. Burt finished with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists while also turning in a solid defensive performance as the main defender in holding the Bulldogs' top player, who scored 26 points in the first meeting at Morenci, to just 13 points this time around. Campbell finished with 10 points and 8 assists, while also doing a great job defensively on the Bulldogs' top guards. The 12 assists between Burt and Campbell was indicative of the sharing of the basketball the team had throughout the game. The team finished with 18 assists on 23 made field goals.
To round out the scoring for Clinton, Eric Briggs finished with 8 points, Gavin Scott had 7 points, Josh Schaffner 6 points, Jacob Huddleston 4 points, Zach Kovach 2 points, and Ethan Herrington had 1 point.
Next up the Redskins will face the Orioles of Quincy on Tuesday, February 12th at home in a nonconference contest. The JV game will tip at 5:30 with the varsity game to follow at 7:00PM.
