SAND CREEK HIGH SCHOOL: 37
On Tuesday evening, the boys JV basketball traveled to Sand Creek for a TCC matchup. The Redskins hadn't played a game in two weeks due to weather related cancellations. There were times that the long layoff seemed to have it's affects on the team, but there were also some flashes throughout the game in which there were no signs of rust that had to be shaken off.
One of those stretches of solid basketball by the Redskins was at the start of the game, as the team raced out to a 14-2 first quarter lead. There were also some missed opportunities in the quarter with some careless turnovers, missed lay-ups, and missed free throws to extend the lead even larger.
Those missed opportunities cost the Redskins in the second quarter, as the offense went stagnant, and couple quick baskets by the Aggies game some confidence. An 8-4 advantage in the quarter by the Aggies kept them hanging around as the halftime score, 18-10, was evident that rust from the lay-off had not been shaken off yet.
In the third quarter, the Redskins began to roll, knocking down back to back threes on their last two possessions of the quarter by Davey Campbell and Tommy Burt as time expired to build a 16 point, 38-22 lead to enter the fourth.
While things seemed to be in control for the Redskins, a quick 7-0 burst by the Aggies brought life back to Sand Creek as the lead was quickly down to single digits. The Redskins would respond, however, and control the game the rest of the way, eventually winning by the final margin, 48-37. The win improved the JV team's record to 8-4 overall, and 8-1 in the TCC.
Tommy Burt was in control from start to finish for the Redskins, leading the team with big 17 point, 12 rebound, double-double. Jacob Huddleston was just one point and one rebound shy of making it two double-doubles for the Redskins, as he finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Davey Campbell had another solid all-around performance finishing with 7 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Josh Schaffner chipped in with 7 points off the bench as well.
The Redskins will be back in action at home on Thursday against another TCC opponent, Madison. The JV game is set for 5:30 with the Varsity game to follow.
